Technical Seminar on Sustainable HVAC System Design
The Seminar is organized jointly by ASHRAE-HKC and BEAM, and is supported by AIIB as one of the Supporting Organizations.
About 90% of total electricity consumption in Hong Kong is contributed by buildings and HVAC system contributed the most energy consumption in commercial buildings. Through enhancement of building energy efficiency, greenhouse gas emissions have been gradually reduced. In October 1998, the Electrical and Mechanical Services Department has launched the voluntary Hong Kong Energy Efficiency Registration Scheme for Buildings to promote the application of the Building Energy Code. To further promote building energy efficiency, the Government enacted the Buildings Energy Efficiency Ordinance (the Ordinance) which has come into full operation since 21 September 2012.
The improvements in the economy and an increased focus on efficiency are driving increases in the market for energy-efficient HVAC equipment and system. Also in the long run, increasingly stringent regulatory environments will also drive growth in energy-efficient commercial HVAC system markets. According to some researches, global revenue for energy-efficient commercial HVAC systems is expected to double in next two decade.
As concerns about the environmental impact of energy generation and uncertainty over future energy prices increase, efficiency improvements in HVAC equipment and systems become more attractive. Over the years, Building Owners, Engineers and Designers are adopting energy efficient system in their buildings, and continue to optimize to its best performance according to the loading demand. Also the market is also looking for some emerging new system and technologies.

Technical Visit - Solid Kitchen Waste Compactor in Kowloon Bay MegaBox
Solid kitchen waste compactors are wildly used in shopping malls. If improperly treated, the residuals remind in the buckets, the compactors and the floor will attract insects, rats and produce smell. Hygiene will be a major problem. The solid waste compactor in Kowloon Bay MegaBox uses a newly discovered enzyme technology to encourage aerobic and facultative bacteria while suppressing anaerobic bacteria which are the major source of rotten odor. The rotten odor in turn attracts insects and rats as the rotten odor signals that there exists semi-digested food. The aerobic and facultative bacteria decompose the residual solid waste to carbon dioxide and water quickly to eliminate the rotten odor, and hence discourage insects and rats.
People in MegaBox turn the solid waste over the compactor for unloading. While in operation, water mixed with very small amount of enzyme will be injected to the bucket so that the waste can go to the compactor quickly while cleaning the bucket. Enzyme in the compactor will also eliminate the rotten odor there. As a result, workers in the vicinity of the compactor are happy to work there and the truck carrying the compactor to landfill is smell free.
Organized by AIIB, supported by ASHRAE-HK, BSOMES, CGB(HK)Council, IFMA-HKC and SOE-HKR, a free Technical Visit is arranged for practitioners of the Building Industry. Registrations on first-come-first-served basis are limited to 30.

Towngas made further modifications to the plant between 2003 and 2006 to cope with increasing customer demand. It has a maximum supply capacity of 9.6 million standard cubic metres of gas a day.
To commit the environmental policy, town gas is now made from high quality naphtha instead of heavy fuel oil, which reduces the emission of sulphur oxide during production. In 2006, Towngas introduced natural gas as a partial feedstock replacement for naphtha.
During the visit, you will be briefed on the town gas production process, plants facilities and its environmental initiatives. After the briefing, you will be invited to visit the naphtha tank farm and natural gas facilities.
IFMA's Industrial Spotlight: Shanghai Energy Saving Project
AIIB acts as a supporting organization for the captioned event.
With the increasing promotion of energy saving, more and more building owners start to pay attention to energy saving and emission reduction. Optimization of energy-saving operation for air conditioning chiller plant system can play an important role for this energy saving and emission reduction promotion. An energy-saving retrofit was carried out on Shanghai IFC chiller plant system, by doing this, the system operating efficiency has been improved significantly and its energy consumption has then been reduced. This research study analyzed the optimization methods and their effects on energy saving and emission reduction based on real operation data from the IFC chiller plant system. We hope this analysis can provide some guidance for future implementation of chiller plant control system optimization to other buildings.

DataCentre Space Conference 2013
The Hong Kong datacenter market is booming. According to CB Richard Ellis office rents in the city’s CBD are still the highest in the world. However datacenters still need a place to go and users complain they cant fit them in on top of which they are constrained by uncertain economies and changeable business expansion plans.
So what made some datacentre users decide to invest in huge new facilities, and why are they building them in Hong Kong? On top of the end-user activity colo companies have also found the confidence to invest in this growing market. What has Hong Kong got to offer and will all the new centres be putting a strain on resources?
What is different about these new facilities that set them apart from other options? And most importantly will they be able to meet the requirements for flexibility, speed and power that the market insists upon? The Conference will have answers to these questions and more at Datacentre Space Hong Kong. Topics include: Hong Kong compared to regional datacenter options Local Hong Kong datacenter options and potential tenants Choosing to colo or build – how the new stock makes a difference How to choose datacenter space including the non technical criteria Risks in the Hong Kong datacenter market.
As datacentres become the hottest property in Hong Kong and China multinational end users and regional datacentre operaters want to know the practical, legal, logistical and financial implications of locating their facilities in each market. Datacentre Space Asia Conference will be held on 21 March in Regal Hong Kong Hotel will answer your questions.
Meet hundreds of delegates from the datacentre industry including case studies from the latest datacentre projects of both colo companies and corporate users, such as banks and multinational tech giants. As the region’s leading media company for industries that make up the built environment we have run several datacentre conferences since 2006 and have a strong track record of attracting a combination of real estate, engineering and IT professionals.

Intelligent Building Index (IBI) Version 3.0
The new index is formally released on 18 January 2005. There are various changes to the Version 2.0 released in October 2001. Dr Leonard Chow is the chief designer of the manual. The revisions will offer greater practicality and better presentation. The deletion of "Construction Process" was mainly due to the fact that it is very difficult to obtain construction information after the building has been built. To be practical, the index with the practical elements in "Management Practice" is introduced. With the implementation of Index 10 "Health and Sanitation" in January 2004, the response from building property management are extremely good. Index 10 applications to residential buildings are particularly popular as a measurement tool for healthy buildings. The new IBI manual Version 3.0 is believed to be a much practical document in the field of Intelligent Buildings with the characteristic of easy to use, easy to understand and easy to calculate.
